Hire information

YorkMusicEd offers a low-cost musical instrument hire service for children and young people – ideal to get playing straight away! Our aim is to give all children access to musical instruments, help them develop confidence in their own ability and give them an opportunity to play with other children in the York area. Free places for families on low income.

We have a wide range of instruments in stock. We can offer advice on purchasing a new instrument as appropriate.

FREE HIRE AVAILABLE FOR FAMILIES ON LOW INCOME:

Free hire also available to those who qualify for Pupil Premium (ask your school for a letter of confirmation) or who are looked after by the local authority.

How do I hire an instrument?

The instrumental hire service operates from York Music Centre at Millthorpe School. PLEASE MAKE AN APPOINTMENT BEFORE ARRIVING AT THE SCHOOL.

If you wish to APPLY TO HIRE AN INSTRUMENT ONLINE please complete the Application Form and we will let you know ASAP if we have an available instrument ready for you to collect.

How do I pay?

We’d like to set up a Direct Debit mandate with you in order to collect payment automatically (termly or monthly). Once this is set up, you won’t need to pay each invoice manually – we can take payment from your bank account automatically.

Hire charges:

Charges are due in advance, paid by monthly Direct Debit. Schools may pay termly in advance by invoice. 

£5.50 (per month) Violin, Viola, Trumpet, Cornet, P-bone (plastic trombone), Flute, J-flute (plastic flute), Clarineo (plastic clarinet), Guitar, Ukulele,

Keyboard £6.50 (per month) Clarinet (Bb),

Trombone £9.00 (per month) French Horn, Cello, Clarinet (A),

Alto Sax £12.00 (per month) Double Bass, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Bassoon, Mini-Bassoon, Oboe, Tuba.

How do I return an instrument?

Notify us in writing (email is OK) at least half a term in advance and return the instrument to York Music Centre by the final Saturday of the term.

What if the instrument stops working?

If the instrument develops a fault through normal use please contact our administrator immediately and we will arrange for its repair or we will replace the instrument with a similar model.

Senior

Senior Ensembles at York Music Centre

The following short clips demonstrate each of the Senior ensembles that we run at York Music Centre. Weekly sessions are aimed at children Grade 5 or above standard.

Minster Minstrels:

The Minster Minstrels is an early music ensemble for school-age musicians run in partnership with The National Centre for Early Music.

Directed by Nina Kumin, the ensemble learns how to interpret the wide variety of music from the Baroque with authentic character and style in a safe space and members have, across the years, built some extraordinarily supportive friendships which have lasted long after they have finished their schooling. The group enjoy opportunities to work with professional groups spending time in York, to explore instruments and repertory from earlier periods, and performance opportunities throughout the year – at the York Early Music Festival. Led by Christian Topman and aimed at children who are playing at Grade 5+ level. Enrol here.

Senior Folkestra

Led by Sarah Loughran and aimed at students who are playing at Grade 5+ level. Enrol here.

Intermediate

Intermediate Ensembles at York Music Centre

The following short clips demonstrate each of the Intermediate ensembles that we run at York Music Centre. Weekly sessions are aimed at children Grade 3-4 standard. Once the students have reached about Grade 5 level, they may progress to Senior ensemble if they wish. Minster Minstrels has an Intermediate and Senior ensemble.

Minster Minstrels:

The Minster Minstrels is NCEM’s youth early music ensemble for school-age musicians – playing any instrument – run in partnership with York Music Centre.
